On March 5, 1999, South Seas University (SSU) received its registration as an independent degree granting tertiary education institution in all areas of academic and professional fields, including by not limited to medicine, law, business, architecture and engineering, by the government of the Cook Islands.
SSU was established because of a need to develop human resources and to bring socio-economic transformation through education, development of skills and technology transfer from technologically advanced countries into the service industry

To be a leading international university, providing individuals of diverse backgrounds, opportunities to develop their creativity and acquire skills and experience in their chosen fields of specialization

SSU Sis organized into colleges and centers for academic activities. A team of qualified administrators conducts the management of the University

SSU is working on maintaining linkages with a number of academic institutions; whose support and cooperation strengthen its academic base.
SSU currently maintains offices in Rarotonga, Cook Is., Loma Linda, CA and Montville, QLD Australia.
SSU is jointly conducting a BSN (Bachelor of Science of Nursing) programs with the Sri Guru Harkrishan Sahib School of Nursing, In Punjab, India.
